Peripheral Angioplasty

Peripheral Angioplasty: A Minimally Invasive Solution for Blocked Arteries
Peripheral Angioplasty

Heart health has become one of the most pressing concerns in today’s medical landscape. Among various cardiovascular conditions, artery blockages—especially in the limbs—can lead to severe pain, mobility issues, and, if left untreated, serious complications. One of the safest and most effective ways to address this is through Peripheral Angioplasty.

At Mahadev Heart Care, Bangalore, we are committed to offering advanced treatments like Peripheral Angioplasty with precision, safety, and personalized care.

What is Peripheral Angioplasty?

Peripheral Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries in areas outside the heart—commonly the legs or arms. These blockages are often caused by plaque buildup, which restricts blood flow and can result in symptoms like pain, numbness, or fatigue during walking or movement.

By restoring normal blood flow, Peripheral Angioplasty reduces symptoms, improves mobility, and helps prevent more serious complications.

When is Peripheral Angioplasty Needed?

Your doctor may recommend this procedure if you have:

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

  • Pain or cramping in the legs while walking (claudication)

  • Non-healing wounds on legs or feet

  • Reduced mobility due to poor circulation

  • Risk of limb ischemia (reduced blood flow to limbs)

What to Expect During the Procedure

At Mahadev Heart Care, our goal is to make your experience smooth, informed, and comfortable from start to finish.

Pre-Procedure Preparation

  • We conduct a thorough evaluation including scans, blood tests, and consultation.

  • Local anesthesia is given to numb the area—usually in the groin or arm.

  • Mild sedation may be used to help you stay relaxed.

During the Procedure

  • A small incision is made, and a thin tube (catheter) is inserted into the affected artery.

  • Using live X-ray imaging, the catheter is guided to the blockage.

  • A balloon at the catheter’s tip is inflated to open up the artery.

  • In many cases, a stent is inserted to keep the artery open for long-term results.

The entire process is done with utmost precision and usually takes about one to two hours.

After the Procedure

  • You’ll rest under observation for a few hours.

  • Our staff will closely monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and incision site.

  • You may feel mild soreness, which is normal and manageable.

Recovery and Aftercare

✅ Immediate Recovery

  • You’ll rest for a few hours in a recovery area.

  • Vital signs are monitored, and the incision site is observed.

  • You can usually go home the same day or the next.

✅ Short-Term Recovery

  • Avoid heavy lifting or intense activity for a few days.

  • Mild walking and gradual movement are encouraged.

  • Follow your medication and aftercare instructions closely.

✅ Long-Term Care

To maintain artery health and prevent future blockages:

  • Adopt a heart-healthy diet

  • Exercise regularly (as advised by your doctor)

  • Stop smoking if you haven’t already

  • Monitor your blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels

  • Attend regular follow-ups
